New Blue Mexico
Release Date: October 23, 2026
New Blue Mexico blends blues rock, Americana, country, and roots music into a vivid journey through the American West. Produced by Grammy-winning Tom Hambridge, the album draws on Randy Lee Riviere’s life as a songwriter, wildlife biologist, and student of history. Through songs about land, water, conflict, survival, and the human condition, Randy connects the old Wild West with the pressures still shaping the region today.
About the Album
New Blue Mexico is my third album with my producer and good friend Tom Hambridge. There really aren’t words I can think of to describe what Tom does for a music project. He’s got magic rolling around in his head.
This record took over a year to piece together, starting the minute I finished the last record, Farmhand Blues. Lots of research was done, lots of musical flavors were tried … and poor Tom had to endure my perfunctory barrage of ideas, snippets, and sentences for all of that time.
I have a lot of passion for making music, just as Tom does. We’re about the same age and have many of the same influences. When we finally get into the studio, he puts himself in that box and shuts out everything but the project—him and the amazing Nashville musicians he pulls together. He’s a good manager and just “lets the horses run” … they just have to stay in the Hambridge pasture, lol.
For New Blue Mexico, we were blessed with Bob Britt on guitar. Bob really went beyond the outer markers on this one … he just kept going out there and adding this, trying that … he worked incredibly hard on this record, and man, it shows.
Mike Rojas is the king of keys as far as I’m concerned. The flavors he adds are priceless. Priceless. Robert Kearns and Tommy Macdonald were so solid on bass. Michael Saint-Leon put down some tasty harmonica. I added some acoustic flavors and did the vocals.
And Tom Hambridge … “The Hammer” … is simply an outstanding drummer and was a killer on this record, as he was on the others. For me, drums are like everything … and Tom brings it, man. I’m so grateful. Plus, he always throws in some cool backing vocals and helps out some with songwriting. Tom is a very clever writer and really brings that too.
Then Tom does the mixing and mastering along with the really talented Michael Saint-Leon, another good friend. These mixes are truly magical, pulling it all together. It ain’t an easy gig.
I hope folks find a few things in this record that inspire them. There’s lots of stuff in there. I hope I don’t put many people to sleep with all the history and environmental rants. We tried to slap on some very cool music mortar … mostly of the blues variety.
New Blue Mexico is really about the Blue Fog that settled into this country in the “Wild West” days and impacted so many people. And how greedy people created another “Wild West” later. True blues was widespread in New Mexico.

I met a traveling pastor
Out on a thirsty road
He asked if I been west
I said I had and he shouldn’t go
West the PecosSaid he was looking
For twisted souls
I said he’s in luck
They just diggin’ holes
West the PecosHis name was LaSalle
He rode an ornery mule
He say Jesus is what he do
Got heaven waiting on youI say you don’t say?
Right here today? Here there’s just killers and thieves
Doing what they please
Jesus don’t live here
West the PecosHe went to meet Judge Bean
The word of God was his means
To justify his rope
A scattergun was his yoke“Vengeance is mine saith the Lord”
Bean said well, it was
It’s eye for an eye here Reverend
You gotta do to them
Before they do it to youWe met some bandito’s
Down from Los Cerrillos
Where they burned haciendas
Took the women! So I put them down flat
They ain’t coming back
LaSalle gave me a look
Said “now Bill you gotta read this book”
I said I will
When the earth stand stillI’ve seen the pastor take to families
Families take to him
Well, maybe he do some good
But the Ring gonna do him in“They need to see their wicked road
“Jesus will save their souls”
I tell him the Ring gonna get a rope
End all this nonsense and hope

I’m standing on top of the world
Standing on top of the worldI work all day and scheme all night
I got to get the ground to make it all right
We’ll have an ocean of cars waiting here for you
I’d have a notion for Mars if it would pencil out tooI’m standing on top of the world
Standing on top of the worldAnd headed out through Needles
To light the desert nightConcrete is what I see
And great God’s holy water rolling out to me
We’ll get our swimming pools and you’ll see
My American dream is red, white, blue … and greenI’m headed out through Needles
To light the desert nightI’m standing on top of the world
Standing on top of the worldA river runs wild if you let it go free
But if you take it all then there’s none for me
Now your grass is green and the blades are long
You’re living out here … where you don’t belongHeaded out through Needles … to light the desert night
And headed out through Needles … to light the desert night

Brother
It’s just you and me
Still Standing
As far as I can see …But I’m looking again
Far and wide
Under big skyRemember when we run
Their fat horses?
Just for fun
Then they brought more gunsWell, I’m looking again
Far and wide
Under big skyHey Hi, Hey Hi, Hey Hi, Hey Hi
Big big thunder
Up from the ground
Under our feetFeel it in our souls
Far and wide
Under SkyFeel it in our souls
Far and wide
Under Big Sky
Everybody see the wagons?
Full of buffalo hidesThey fill them up
Can you Look?
Can You Look?I can see them
Loaded way down
With buffalo hidesThey leave the meat on the ground
Buzzards got to eat
That’s what they saidOh, the buzzards got to eat
Oh yeah, the buzzard do gotta eat
What the natives gonna eat? -

On a Pennsylvania highwayIt’s a May day
A May dayIt’s still cold
But they say

And she went straight home
Now she’s long goneYou don’t say?
It’s the Amish hauling hay
On their way
Working their own timeYou gotta think darn straight
Aint America great
It’s May DayHey pretty girl
Why you got to go home?
You were my girl
And left me there all aloneIt’s May Day
May Day
This year
It falls on a SaturdayIt’s May Day
A cold May day
The sun will come
But winter ain’t doneAnd the chickens
Will start to layCool colored eggs
With some bacon on the side
On a Pennsylvania countrysideThis is where she belong
So she got straight on home
I Shoulda’ tagged alongThis is where she is from
And she went straight home
Now she’s long gone.©2025 Randy Lee Riviere and Tom Hambridge

He was a working man
My old man
Was a drinking manNow momma was all in
With the local Baptist clanMy old man
Climbed power poles
In hurricane winds
Rain and snowHe never held back
From getting’
That overtime stackNow Momma wanted
That stack
I just wanted a baseball glovePreacher come round
Talk that sinnin’ man down
I said leave him alone
We just lucky he’s homeMy old man
Was a profane man
I Learned my whole vocabulary
From him working’ on cars
If he didn’t know a word
He’d just make one upI cried and cried
When they sat me down
Asked me if I wanted to go with him
Or herI just said
Probably my brother.Momma was old testament
Spare the rod spoil the child
She’d swing a wooden spoon
Like Babe RuthShe was a heavy hitter
A power hitterMy old man
Was a bombing man
Flew into fire
That sent babies to the ground30 times
30 timesMy old man
He was a drinking man
He didn’t think out loud
He back in hell do doubtLeave him alone
Let him drink
We just lucky he’s homeAnd we’re alive
My old man.

The cold desert grass
Ain’t gonna last
Yeah, it’s going fast
Down New Mexico
Down New MexicoWe heard the young women crying
Their young men were trying
So we run them hard
Down New Mexico
We run them hard
Down New MexicoBut Oh yeah I’m alive
Dear God I’m alive
I know you thought that I died
With such a short lifeHad to make our own law
Before they all fall
Ain’t enough grass for them allYeah it gone wild
For a long, long while
We should have died everyday
Down New MexicoOh I’m alive
My God I’m alive
I know you thought that I died
With such a short life2022 Randy Riviere

They tell us we can’t stay
Gotta leave today
And no one ever say
They’re sorrySome went away
Died along the wayI decided to stay
We came up from the ground
Never make a sound
Came down from the sky
We don’t ever lieWe hear what they say
It don’t matter anywayNow we can’t be found
But we’ll always be aroundGhosts

Out here the fields roll on and on
And the tractors run after the days are done
Into the morningNow out here on the Cimarron
There’s sun grass and grain
But out there on those roads I’ve run
There’s only fable and shame
But out here on the Cimarron
Those roads end anywayTo Sante Fe this was the way long ago
And the river ran red if it rained up ahead
Gave life to the livingNow out here on the Cimarron
There’s sun, grass and grain
But out there on those roads I’ve run
There’s only fable and pain
But out here on the Cimarron
Those roads end anywayI will believe that I will be strong
But is heaven just another place
That I don’t belongI will believe that I will be strong
But is heaven just another place
That I don’t belong? The old trapper said you just might end up dead Along that road
So do not stray from the team any day
Or there’ll be troubleNow out here on the Cimarron
There’s sun grass and grain
But out there on those roads I’ve run
There’s only fable and shame
But out here on the Cimarron
Those roads end anywayI will believe I will be strong
But is heaven just another place
That I don’t belong?I will believe I will be strong
But is heaven just another place
That I don’t belong?Randy Riviere April 2020

What a wretched road
I need to lighten my load
Aint no other way ahead
I got thieves and gators in my head
… and snakesBranches slappin at my face
I ain’t leaving no trace
Vines are grabbin’ at my feet
My heart’s been skipping the second beatLord, if I make it out alive
I’ll stand by your side
I’ll take your dip live
Just get me out alive
Lighten my load
Lighten my loadAll the creatures that I meet
Everything living gotta eat
And I know this to be true
No way I’m getting back to you …‘Less
The Lord, Lightens my load
Lightens my load
Please lighten my load
Lighten my load
I just want to get
Back home2025 Randy Lee Riviere

Sun and Thunder
Crossed the sky
Time I wonder
Goes by and by
Blood and plunder
Rode the windDown at Shiloh
Could it happen again?Your kids
And your neighbors
Cross the road
Lines and borders
They don’t really know
Their lives and their wonder
Could never mendDown at Shiloh
Could it happen again?Fire and water
Runs through your old veins
The times and the colors
Just are not the same
Tomorrow will you go back
See some old friends?Down at Shiloh
Could it happen again?Down at Shiloh
Could it happen again?2011 Randy Riviere
