Blues Sky
Release Date: October 20, 2023
Blues Sky is an 11-track collection of original songs recorded in Nashville with Grammy-winning producer and multi-instrumentalist Kevin McKendree. Riviere is joined by McKendree, drummer Kenneth Blevins, bassist David Santos, and the McCrary Sisters on backing vocals. The record blends blues, rock, and country-inflected songwriting, with songs including “American Redoubt,” “Needles,” “Old Country’s Son,” “Joseline,” and “Cold Cold River.”
Album Narrative
I’ve written and played a lot of Blues-oriented songs over the years, but I dug a little deeper into the genre in Blues Sky.
I was back with Kevin McKendree at his studio in Franklin, Tennessee. This one was a little rough as I was enduring a gnarly bout with the Shingles that had lingering effects. Some pretty powerful drugs were needed and I was pretty zoned much of the time. But thanks to Kevin, we got gutted it out really well. Going into this Kevin told me that “I wasn’t a blues artist”. Well, he shouldn’t of done that. So this was the genesis of my work in the blues vein that I’m still doing today. I love it here and should thank Kevin for that.
And another cool group of players:
Vocals and guitars: Randy Lee Riviere
Guitars, keyboards and vocals: Kevin McKendree
Drums: Kenneth Blevins
Bass: David Santos
Background vocals: Ann, Regina and Freda McCrary. ‘The McCrary Sisters’.

Well I saw strangers the other day
I expect they were looking for our hard earned pay
I called my brother just to let him know
He said warn the neighbors they got to goThen I saw danger in a black sedan
Knew it wasn’t Mormon’s or Father Dan
I called my brother just to let him know
He said grab the children, it’s time to goSometime I lost my mind
No need to tell Momma not to pay those bills
They just shut down old Baker’s mill
I called my brother just to let him know
He said to meet our brothers down at Crooked BowDaddy said this country has gone to hell
He ain’t buying all that horseshit they try to sell
I called my brother just to let him know
He said they were surrounded by a flock of crowsSometime I lost my mind
Sometime I lost my mindThey had a van full of bullets and a dozen guns
A drone and a chopper just for fun
All my brothers are gonna show
We gonna make them suffer for the seeds they sow
I’m a man of conviction, our Country’s son
We’ll fight for each other until it’s done
We’re out in the woods all dug in
They gonna meet their maker for all their sinsSometime I lost my mind
Sometime I lost my mind© 2023 Randy Lee Riviere and Kevin McKendree

It was said
I’d turn up dead
Well, of course I willBut I’m doing fine thanks
And you’re so kind to askI gone astray they said
Lost my way and head
Well, of course I didBut I’m doing fine thanks
And you’re so kind to askWhat I get to do here
Is not to be you, that’s right
Just do what I do, oh yeahI’m doing fine thanks
And you’re so kind to askHere winter cuts deep
No crops to reap
Just my soulI’m doing fine thanks
And you’re so kind to askWell I’m doing fine thanks
And you’re so kind to ask -
You either do or you don’t
You either will or you won’t
I can’t say that I will
I can’t say that I won’tWe can’t see ‘cause we’re blind
But we’ll get there on timeMove on over Maestro
Boy it’s past time to go
These wheels are round don’t you know
Made to get up and goWe can’t see ‘cause we’re blind
But we’ll be there on timeYou don’t get your love right
You have to turn out that light
Put some wind in your hair
Meet someone there
We can’t see ‘cause we’re blind
But we’ll be there on timeWe can’t see ‘cause we’re blind
But we’ll be there on time -
I’m standing on top of the world
Standing on top of the worldI work all day and scheme all night
I got to get the ground just to get it all right
I’ve got an ocean of cars waiting here for you
I’d have a notion for Mars if it would pencil out tooI’m standing on top of the world
Standing on top of the worldAnd headed out through Needles
To light the desert nightI’m standing on top of the world
Standing on top of the worldConcrete is what I see
And great God’s holy water rolling out here to me
We’ll get our swimming pools damn near free
My American dream is red, white, blue and greenI’m headed out through Needles
To light the desert night
I’m standing on top of the world
Standing on top of the worldA river runs wild if you let it go free
But if you take it all there’s none for me
Now your grass is green and the blades are long
But you’re living out here … where you don’t belongI’m headed out through Needles … to light the desert night
I’m headed out through Needles … to light the desert night

Don’t want no spit shine
Don’t need no fancy wine
Don’t want no fast car
Don’t need to go farYou bring me down
Like a bad dreamI Got imagination
No explanationYou got me down
But I’ll be aroundDon’t need no T Bone
In a big home
Don’t want the best clothes
Don’t need no big showBut I’ll be around
I got imagination
No explanationI’m back in town
If you can come downDon’t want no spit shine
Don’t need no fancy wine
Don’t want no fast car
Don’t need to go farYou bring me down
Like a bad dreamI got imagination
No explanationI’ll be around

Tell me why
This river’s so wide
Should I try again
To get to the other side?
Just one more time
Push fate asideThere’s been a big rain up ahead
The current is strong
These legs have gone weak
My old horse is gone
And I never took a hand line
Not one timeCan I see you
One more time?
Can I see you
Another time?
Oh my love
To ease this tired mindWell I could build a boat
With these rough hands
And those dead trees there
I think I can
Cast right off
Get back to my native land
Can I see you
One more time?
Can I see you
One more time?
Oh my love
To ease this troubled mindOh my love
To ease this tired mind -
They thought that you wouldn’t
Now they know that you will
They didn’t read your book
No, you’ll never get you fillHey your back in the news
It’s been a long time
But those lines that you use
Are yours but are not mine
Ooo … ooo … Ooo … oooOn the ground and in the water
On the stars in the sky
You come to give no quarter
Ain’t no use to sit and cry
We just talk and talk
Tell you how to walkBut it doesn’t really matter
Your boys are here to rockOoo … ooo … Ooo … ooo
Ooo … ooo … Ooo … oooYou can’t hear him
But he’s coming
You can’t see him
But he’ll be here soon
Can you feel him?
Are you running yet?Ooo … ooo … Ooo … ooo
Ooo … ooo … Ooo … oooYeah boys are boys
Loving all their toys
They like them good and loud
To take them out and make some noiseOoo … ooo … Ooo … ooo
Ooo … ooo … Ooo … ooo -
All you do is shout
Is that what it is you all about?
All you do is shout
But I’m not listening to a word you’re saying. What you know about pain?
Old man went to hell
Babies spun down in balls of flame
My brother did as well
They cried for their mothers
When they fell. What you know about pain?
All you do is shout
Is that what it is you all about?
All you do is shout
But I’m not listening to a word you’re sayingWhat you know about pain?
What you know about pain?

Met you way out west
You were smiling with the best
I said I’m headed south
That’s what I’m all aboutShe jumped right on the bus
Five steps ahead of us
But only held my hand
Saying baby you’re my manOh Joseline
Tell me what you mean?
Oh Joseline
Tell me what you mean?Back in Baton Rouge
You came down with the blues
And said you’d find your way
You were sorry you couldn’t stayOh Joseline
Tell me what you mean?
Oh Joseline
Tell me what you mean?
Up north it was so damn cold
I felt this arm reach out and hold
My body far and wide
Saying baby you’ll never hideWoke up and you was gone
But my heart had grown so strong
You were crazy in your way
I knew I needed you that dayOh Joseline
Tell me what you mean?
Oh Joseline
Tell me what you mean?I know I got you now
I wrote your song, that is how
Was no need to say
We finally found our way
Oh Joseline
Now I Know what it is you need
Oh Joseline
Now I know what it you meanOh Joseline
Now I know what it is you need
Oh Joseline
Now I know what it is you mean -
I knew sunshine
Quite well
I knew sunshine
So very well
Then I got this cold heart
And darkness fellI held love
In my arms
I held love
In my arms
Now I got these cold hands
That do nothin but harm
Cold cold river
Roll on your way
Cold cold river
Roll on your away
Lord I need your warm waters
To wash this heartache awayI need back the sunshine
To light this dark
I want back that sunshine
To light all this dark
And warm these tired hands Lord
With love in my heartCold cold river
Roll on your way
Cold cold river
Roll away
Lord I need your warm waters
To wash this heartache away
I been a hard hard sinner
All that weight inside
I been a hard hard sinner
That big weight inside
Lord cast all that pain and hurt I do asideCold cold river
Roll on your way
Cold cold river
Roll away
Lord I need your warm waters
To wash this heartache awayCold cold river
Roll on your way
Cold cold river
Roll away
Lord I need your warm waters
To wash this heartache awayLord I need your warm waters
To wash this heartache awayLord I need your warm waters
To wash this heartache away
