Fool Stand

Release Date: 2006

Folk-rock Americana with many twists and turns; important environmental themes cast into cool melodies.

Singer/songwriter, wildlife biologist, Randy Riviere reunites with Michael Ward and other great musicians to develop an organic sound quite fitting with Riviere’s strong environmental themes. The Buffalo will have succeeded if listeners become more enlightened about the fate of our landscape as they enjoy a quality musical experience.

Album Narrative

Being the American history buff that I am, I was reading Shelby Foote’s trilogy on the Civil War when the U.S. attacked Iraq in 2003. I just couldn’t believe that we were doing that.  It took a few years after that started, but my second record “Fool Stand” was born around that time. The album became this hybrid I guess about two ridiculous wars. My focus with the title track was the ‘in the trenches’ human part.  A stark tune about kids, many just babies really, looking at death straight away.  “Here I am God, standing on this line, waiting on the Captain’s call.  Feeling like my heart has lost my hands, on this Fool Stand”.  War.  These poor men of soon to be devastated mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers … some on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line.  Like most wars, these were the people out there fighting because ‘the grown ups’ couldn’t find another way.  Merchants needed to move their products.  Human beings, they and their ancestors enslaved for many generations were an engrained part of the Southern economy.  Most folks know the story.  Iraq?  What was that really about?  Mostly about what conflicts are usually about in the Middle East, I guess.  Weapons of Mass Destruction?  Well …

Michael Ward and I really took the album on and ran with it.  So it was a guitar heavy record.  Perhaps the most memorable thing about that album was Michaels riveting ebow harmony he did for “Tangerines”. This tune was really about the utility of hard work.  Staying busy has always been an important thing for me to do.  “My father was a simple man, made his living with his hands.  But those dollars were just one thing, to make a living on this land”.

“Glory Days” was this post 911 tune really … just a hey, we’ll get through this tragedy.  “Devil’s Blood” about big oil … we did some heavy hammering sound effects on this one … gettin’ on down after those fossil beds. And so forth.  It was a fun album to make.

Michael was a perfect fit for my music.

We were back at Earle Mankey’s studio again for Fool Stand.  Earle produced the album.  Dave Hawks and Chad Fischer were on the drums.  Gary McKensie and Reggie McBride on bass.  Marty Grebb on keyboards and Michael and I on the guitars.  I sang the best I could at that time, lol.  I was always a guitar player.
